Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol)
Category: compound
A mitochondrial electron transport chain cofactor and potent lipid-soluble antioxidant. Studied for neuroprotection in ALS and Parkinson's disease.
Mechanism Detail
CoQ10 serves as an electron carrier between Complex I/II and Complex III of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. As ubiquinol (reduced form), it scavenges lipid peroxyl radicals and regenerates vitamin E. Supports ATP production in energy-demanding neurons.
Clinical Status
Phase II trial in ALS showed no significant benefit at tested doses. Ongoing research explores higher doses and combination protocols. Well-studied safety profile.
