Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Category: technique
Breathing pure oxygen at elevated atmospheric pressure to increase tissue oxygenation, stimulate angiogenesis, and modulate immune function.
Mechanism Detail
HBOT at 1.5-2.5 ATA increases dissolved plasma oxygen 10-15x. This triggers HIF-1α/VEGF-mediated angiogenesis, mobilizes stem cells from bone marrow, reduces inflammation via IL-10 upregulation, and creates hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox that stimulates cellular repair mechanisms. In cancer, it may reduce tumor hypoxia and sensitize cells to radiation.
Clinical Status
FDA-approved for 14 conditions (wound healing, decompression sickness). Off-label use for neurological conditions expanding. Israeli trials showed cognitive improvement and telomere lengthening in aging adults. Cancer adjunctive trials ongoing.
