Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Category: compound
A medicinal mushroom containing hericenones and erinacines that stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis, studied for cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection.
Mechanism Detail
Hericenones (from fruiting body) and erinacines (from mycelium) cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate NGF and BDNF production. NGF promotes neuronal survival, axonal growth, and myelin repair. Additional mechanisms include reduction of ER stress, anti-inflammatory effects, and promotion of hippocampal neurogenesis.
Clinical Status
Small clinical trials in mild cognitive impairment show cognitive improvement during supplementation. Larger trials needed. Generally recognized as safe. Available as supplement and food.
