Mechanism Detail
NMN is converted to NAD+ via nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase (NMNAT). NAD+ is essential for mitochondrial function (Complex I), sirtuin activity, DNA repair (PARP enzymes), and cellular energy metabolism. NAD+ levels decline with age and in neurodegenerative diseases.
Clinical Status
Multiple human trials show safety and NAD+ level increases. Long-term efficacy for neurodegeneration is unproven. Available as supplements (not regulated as pharmaceuticals).
