Resveratrol

Category: compound

A polyphenol stilbenoid found in grapes and berries with sirtuin-activating, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties studied across cancer and neurodegeneration.

Mechanism Detail

Resveratrol activates SIRT1 (sirtuin deacetylase), promoting mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC-1α. It inhibits NF-κB, cyclooxygenase enzymes, and has demonstrated anti-proliferative effects in multiple cancer cell lines. Crosses the blood-brain barrier in modest concentrations.

Clinical Status

Clinical trials show mixed results. Bioavailability is low due to rapid glucuronidation. Sustained-release and micronized formulations attempt to address this. No FDA-approved therapeutic indication.
