Curcumin + Sulforaphane Interaction
⚠️ RESEARCH-BASED INTERACTION DATA — NOT COMPREHENSIVE.
Interaction Type: synergistic | Evidence Level: moderate
Curcumin and sulforaphane synergistically suppress NF-κB inflammation while activating Nrf2 antioxidant defenses — a dual anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective strategy.
Mechanism of Interaction
Curcumin directly inhibits IKKβ kinase, blocking NF-κB activation. Sulforaphane is the most potent natural Nrf2 inducer, upregulating >200 phase II detoxification enzymes. These pathways are reciprocally regulated: Nrf2 activation suppresses NF-κB, and NF-κB suppression de-represses Nrf2. The combination amplifies both arms of this crosstalk.
Clinical Relevance
Preclinical studies show synergistic anti-cancer effects in prostate, breast, and pancreatic cancer models. Both are well-tolerated supplements. The combination targets inflammation and oxidative stress — the two drivers of chronic disease and neurodegeneration.
Recommendations
- Take curcumin (enhanced formulation) with meals, sulforaphane on empty stomach
- Sulforaphane from broccoli sprout extract (myrosinase-active) is most bioavailable
- No known adverse interaction — complementary mechanisms
- Consider for long-term anti-inflammatory + chemopreventive strategy
