Apigenin for ALS
Also known as: 4',5,7-trihydroxyflavone, Chamomile extract
Apigenin's NAD+ preservation and anti-inflammatory effects may support motor neuron survival in ALS.
Mechanism of Action
Apigenin's CD38 inhibition maintains NAD+ pools in motor neurons, supporting SIRT1/3-dependent mitochondrial protection. Its NF-κB inhibition reduces neuroinflammatory damage from activated microglia and astrocytes.
General mechanism: Flavone. CD38 inhibitor (NAD+ preservation), NF-κB suppressor, CK2/PI3K inhibitor, BDNF promoter.
Current Evidence
Preclinical neuroprotection data. CD38 as therapeutic target in ALS is emerging. No ALS-specific trials.
Clinical Status: Preclinical. Available as supplement.
Safety Profile
Very safe. Naturally present in diet. Sedative at high doses (chamomile effect). No significant drug interactions.
